Hepatitis B vaccination: understanding your travel risk

Hepatitis B vaccination: understanding your travel risk

Hepatitis B is a viral infection spread through blood and body fluids. The likelihood of exposure varies widely between travellers, so advice should reflect your activities as well as your destination.

Which trips may carry greater risk?

  • Long stays or frequent travel to higher-risk areas
  • Healthcare, aid work or other occupational exposure
  • Activities where injury may require medical or dental treatment abroad
  • New sexual partners, tattoos or piercings during travel

How else can travellers reduce exposure?

Avoid unsterile needles, tattoos and piercings, do not share razors or injecting equipment, and use appropriate protection during sex. Travel insurance and prompt access to reputable medical care are also important if you become unwell or injured.

What if I am travelling soon?

Different vaccine schedules may be considered depending on timing and individual circumstances. Bring your departure date and any previous vaccination record to a consultation so the pharmacist can assess the most appropriate option rather than relying on a generic schedule.
